The Problem: Washer Spins but Will Not Agitate
An Orlando customer called about their Maytag top-load washer. It would start and even run the spin cycle, but it would not agitate during the wash, so clothes came out barely cleaned.
Diagnosis: Voltage at the Timer, Not at the Motor
When a washer spins but does not agitate, the common causes are a worn agitator coupling, a failed drive or motor component, a bad lid switch or a wiring or timer fault. Our technician tested the circuit and found that voltage was reaching the timer but not continuing to the motor during the agitate portion of the cycle. Tracing the harness revealed a burnt wire.
The Repair
The technician repaired the damaged wiring and restored a secure connection between the timer and the motor circuit. The washer immediately began agitating normally, and a full test cycle confirmed correct operation.
Why Washer Wires Burn
- Loose connections that heat up over time.
- Vibration from unbalanced loads wearing insulation.
- Moisture reaching connectors from leaks.
A burnt wire should always be traced to its cause. Simply reconnecting it without fixing a loose terminal can lead to the same failure again.
