The Problem: Dryer Runs but Clothes Stay Damp
An Orlando customer called because their Samsung electric dryer was no longer drying clothes properly. The drum turned and the dryer ran through its cycle, but the clothes came out damp. The dryer was also due for general maintenance.
Diagnosis: No Heat
Our technician confirmed that the dryer was not heating. On an electric dryer, the usual suspects are the heating element, the thermal fuse, the high-limit or cycling thermostat, and power supply to the element. Testing showed the heating element had failed, while the rest of the heating circuit checked out.
The Repair and Maintenance
The technician replaced the heating element and then cleaned and checked the rest of the dryer, including the lint path and other components that affect airflow. Good airflow is essential: a restricted vent makes the element and thermostats run hot and is a common reason elements fail early. After the repair, the dryer heated normally and dried a full load in the expected time.
Why Dryer Heating Elements Fail
- Restricted exhaust vents or lint buildup inside the dryer.
- Overloading, which lengthens cycles and heat exposure.
- Normal wear after years of use.
Cleaning the lint screen after every load and checking the vent run regularly are the best ways to protect a new element.
