The Problem: A Front-Load Washer With a Failing Seal
An Orlando customer called about their Whirlpool Duet front-load washer. During diagnosis our technician found that the door seal, also called the door boot or bellow, was broken. On front-load washers, a damaged seal commonly leads to water leaking from the front of the machine during the wash cycle.
The Repair: Replacing the Door Boot
Replacing a front-load door seal involves removing the clamps that hold it to the front panel and the tub, fitting the new boot in the correct position and securing both clamps so it seals evenly. After the new seal was installed, the technician ran a test cycle to confirm there were no leaks. The washer was back in normal operation.
Why Door Seals Tear
- Coins, pins and hair clips caught in the folds of the seal.
- Mold and detergent residue that make the rubber brittle over time.
- Overloading that forces clothes against the seal during spin.
How to Care for a Front-Load Washer Seal
- Check pockets before washing.
- Wipe the seal dry after the last load of the day.
- Leave the door open so the drum can air out.
- Use HE detergent in the recommended amount.
- Run a cleaning cycle monthly.
