The Problem: Water Leaking and a Stuck Drawer
A customer in Orlando called about their Samsung French door refrigerator. Water was leaking from the door area, and the bottom drawer in the fresh-food section would not open. Leaking is one of the most common complaints we see on Samsung French door models.
Diagnosis: Following the Water
Our technician found traces of water on the front of the freezer door and at the rear inside the fresh-food compartment. That pattern pointed to the defrost drain. When the drain line clogs or freezes, meltwater from the defrost cycle cannot reach the drain pan. It overflows inside the cabinet, runs toward the front and can freeze under drawers, which is why the bottom drawer was stuck.
The Repair: Clearing the Drain Line
Our technician removed the rear cover inside the refrigerator, cleared the ice and debris from the drain line and confirmed that water flowed freely to the drain pan. With the drain open, the leak stopped and the drawer moved freely again. The refrigerator was back to normal operation on the same visit.
How to Spot a Clogged Refrigerator Drain
- Water pooling under crisper drawers or on the floor in front of the refrigerator.
- A sheet of ice on the bottom of the fresh-food or freezer compartment.
- Drawers that stick or will not open.
- Dripping or gurgling sounds during defrost.
If the problem returns repeatedly, a failing defrost heater or sensor may be causing incomplete defrost, and those parts should be tested.
