The Problem: Drinks No Longer Cold
A business in Orlando called because their Beverage-Air M3F47-2 commercial refrigerator had stopped cooling drinks. For a restaurant or bar, a warm beverage cooler means lost sales and unhappy guests.
Diagnosis: Compressor Not Running
Our technician found that the refrigerator had power, but the compressor was not running. A compressor that does not start can have a failed start relay or overload, a bad start capacitor, a failed compressor, or a wiring problem. Further inspection showed that the common wire on the compressor terminal had completely burned out, so the compressor could not complete its circuit.
The Repair
The technician replaced the burnt wire and terminal connection and confirmed that the compressor started and ran normally. The refrigerator began pulling down temperature right away, and the customer's guests could enjoy cold drinks again.
Why Compressor Terminals Burn
Compressor terminals carry high current. A slightly loose connection creates heat, which oxidizes the terminal and increases resistance until the wire burns through. Dirty condenser coils make this worse by increasing compressor load. When a burnt terminal is found, the compressor terminals and start components should also be checked.
